Welcome!Hello, welcome to my blog focusing on my Independent Study! I'm very excited to be sharing my journey with you as I learn what being a physical therapist is like. If you missed my blog about Health class, then you may not know what an Independent Study is. Three times every year, my high school does these special classes called Intensives (this is the first intensive). For three weeks, we take a unique class that's usually not the normal calculus, biology, and English class. For example, you can learn about Medieval Literature, how to play an instrument, or even go on a school trip to another country. The "alternative" to an Intensive is an Independent Study, which is where you have the opportunity to leave campus to learn about whatever you choose! I thought this would be good opportunity to explore the possibility of studying physical therapy in college. I was able to get in contact with a physical therapist, who I call Mr. Swartz, and he was more than happy to let me shadow him for the duration of the three weeks. Mr. Swartz is a really nice guy with so much knowledge in his field. He treats mainly runners, as he feels connected to them because Mr. Swarts is also a runner himself. It's almost like it's a "match made in heaven" because I'm also a runner! He's very motivated and serious about running, which is perfect because I am too, so I'm very excited to get to know him better. GoalsThere's a few things I would like to get out of this experience. First, I want to get hands-on experience with PT, so I can see if it's actually something I'd like to do in the future. Second, I want to apply what I learn to my training. Whether it be different exercises, stretches, or just more techniques to running that I could use when I'm training for cross country or track. Then, I want to see how that effects my running. Once I get a day where I don't have soccer or cross country, I want to get my time for a 60 meter dash. Then, over the course of the three weeks, I'll incorporate whatever I learn into my training. I'm thinking maybe twice a week I'll get a time for 60m dash to see if incorporating what I learn makes a difference. Stay TunedEveryday I go in, I'll post on this blog telling about my experience. I'll have plenty of pictures, eventually, and maybe even a video of Mr. Swartz analyzing my running form!
